We spent her 4th birthday in Connecticut this year, having made a pretty much last-minute decision to travel for the Thanksgiving week. We all desperately needed a break from the scandal stuff here at PSU, plus it had been two years since all four of us had visited (or, really, traveled anywhere) out there. Cindy and Sostena were kind enough to put us up, adding substantially to the chaos of an already chaotic week. Thanks, friends!
Of COURSE we had a pink cake. The girl is very serious about her preferences. Please notice the sartorial choices below:

That's some dedication. She also has a new (hot)pink winter coat and got, from her brother, a pink stuffed puppy.
So we had a great trip that began on the actual birthday with a visit to the Peabody Museum--an all-time favorite for all of us--but I think Paul has those pictures, whoops. It was great fun, though. Who isn't thrilled by an enormous T-Rex skull?
We also had fun seeing Aunt Catherine and Lauren down at Modern Apizza in New Haven. (again, Paul's camera has the better pictures.) She brought cupcakes (pink & orange) and fun mood watches and lots of smooches. If you didn't already know (from my proselytizing about it forever), New Haven pizza is among the best, most perfect foods on the planet. Don't believe me? Ask Rudy, who is notoriously picky about pizza. (he won't touch red sauce) We ordered him a white pie with pepperoni and olives and he devoured half of it himself, exclaiming, "This stuff is the BEST EVER." It was a proud moment for his mama, who was likewise devouring a classic white clam and garlic pie.

We also got to see Heidi and go the park (it was a pretty mild week), where the kids made fast friends with other kids. Oh, the glory of sitting on a bench watching them go off and make connections fearlessly! Speaking of which, on the last day, we left New Haven for New Fairfield and a too-quick visit with Donna and Steve & Nicole who are finally back in the East after having been stationed in Hawaii. We've been saying for years that we couldn't wait for our kids to meet (they are close in age), but this was the first time, and it went really well!

Our last stop was one of the week's real highlights for me. I have told the kids stories for years about how my parents would take me and Catherine to the Red Rooster Drive-In in Brewster, NY for soft-serve ice cream. Highlight of my childhood, for sure. Well it's right around the corner from Donna's house, so....
Bellies full of deliciousness before the 5 hour drive home. A sweet, perfect end to a sweet, perfect trip.
