Tasty Treats

We celebrated Paul's 35th birthday last week with not one but two chocolate cakes. However, only one is pictured here and that is because I completely burned the first one--the official one on his actual birthday--so badly that instead of cakes, they resembled two large chocolate frisbees. Oh well. Rudy and I frosted it and decorated it anyway because everyone deserves a chocolate cake and candles and singing and wish-making on their actual birthday!

This is the one we had at his party on Saturday. It was delicious!
(And yes, it's a joke.)

Our friends Kim and Matt traveled to Mexico over spring break to celebrate their honeymoon, and brought back something very special to share--crispity crunchy, slightly spicy chapulines:

Can you see into the jar? They're grasshoppers! Yes, the ones you find in the garden. They're considered a delicacy in Oaxaca, and now in State College as well. Rudy must have eaten twenty of these completely gleefully, popping them quite literally like popcorn. Amazing. Our friends Alexandra and Katrina stopped by on Easter and even Katrina had a taste. Something about kids not knowing that Americans don't typically eat bugs. But hey, they're a great protein source and who am I to stand in the way of a usually picky toddler and his new favorite food?
